Hanoverton OH Schedules This Year’s Peddler’s Days for Mid-July

The village of Hanoverton, Ohio, will again be alive with its annual Hanoverton Village Peddler’s Days July 12 & 13th this year. Hanoverton OH lies east of Canton on U.S. Route 30, the Lincoln Highway, at the intersection of Route 9 in Columbiana County. The town is situated on the former 73-mile Sandy and Beaver Canal midway between the canal’s Smith’s Ferry start at the Ohio River to the Ohio-Erie Canal in Bolivar, OH. What is now Lincoln Street is probably the towpath of the old canal.

Settled in 1813 by Quaker abolitionist, James Craig, early Hanoverton became a safe-haven for runaway slaves. Remnants of the underground passage are still evident today between George Sloan’s "Brick Row" with his brother-in-law Dr. James Robertson’s home across the street. From there at nightfall the runaways would board a canal boat and flee to their next safe haven on their way to freedom in Canada.

Hanoverton became a flourishing center of commerce with a peak population in the late 1830s. You’ll think you’ve stepped back in time as you stroll though the 1800s village streets, an architectural wonderland lined with two-story brick homes and stores. In 1977 an entire 23-acre area of Hanoverton was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Hanoverton Canal Town District. The district is noted for canal-era architecture, which is largely unchanged since construction in the mid-1800s.

Peddler’s Days is a community family fun day, an American extravaganza of activities for everyone. Watch how our North & South soldiers fought each other during a Civil War reenactment with the participants wearing period costumes.

The Hanover Township Historical Society will be open both days during the festival for you to view artifacts of Hanoverton’s history. They’ll be serving strawberries and ice cream, just like in the old days. In addition, visitors will be able to participate in Hanoverton’s famous Ghost Walk on Friday night.

The Petting Zoo from the Broken Smile Farm is always the children’s favorite. City kids can see, hear, and touch a wide variety of live farm animals. If chickens lay any eggs, the kids even get to take the eggs home.

Saturday at 4pm, dinner is served – and it’s free. If you like spaghetti, make Hanoverton your destination on July 12. You and your family can be a part of an 1800s church service at the Hanoverton Christian Church on Historic Plymouth Street at 8:00 am Sunday morning.

Proceeds from the entire weekend event benefit the Hanoverton Fire Department, the Historical Society, the village’s two churches, as well as the local businesses. So make it a point to save July 12 & 13 for Hanoverton Village Peddler’s Days. For more information, you may call 330-223-2131, 330-223-2485, or 330-223-3009.
